Oct 16: Privileges committee of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha summoned India’s envoy of the US Ronen Sen for calling those parliamentarians who opposed the Indo-nuclear deal as ‘headless chickens’.

The decision to summon him was taken unanimously by the committee on Monday which was headed by the deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha.

The date for his appearance has not been fixed yet and this will be done later after mutual consultation of the committees of both the houses.

Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee had referred the matter to the privileges committee after receiving the written unqualified apology by the Ronen Sen for his controversial comments which he said were directed at journalists and not at parliamentarians.

The next meeting of the Rajya Sabha committee will be held on November 2 nd.

This is the first time that any high profile diplomat will be called to appear before the committees of the house.

This is to be known that during monsoon session when controversy was going on the nuclear deal with US, Ronen Sen’s remarks added fuel to fire. Ronen was quoted saying, “Why do you have all this running around like headless chicken, looking for a comment here or comment there, and these little storms in a cup of tea”.

At that time too Ronen clarified that his comments have been misrepresented by the media and they were directed for media persons and not politicians.

Ministry of External Affairs has pleaded that the matter be closed in view of the fact of his unqualified apology in black and white.

The meeting of the Privilege committee of the Lok Sabha is scheduled to be held on November 29 and 30.
