Foreign skilled workers may reduce local Brits to pouring concrete

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

London, Aug.11 (ANI): Foreign engineers and scientists might be leading an industrial renaissance in Britain, but their presence in the country could eventually reduce local Britishers, especially the younger generation to learn how to pour concrete, the head of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Richard Lambert, has warned.

In the next two decades Britain will rebuild a third of its power generators, host the 2012 Olympics, complete the 30 billion pound London Crossrail line and rebuild or remodel every secondary school.

Yet, unless action is taken to train young people as engineers and scientists, British workers may have only manual jobs, The Times quoted Lambert, as saying.

"The question is whether our fellow citizens will do more than just pour concrete. There are big opportunities to be grasped," he said.

He said that bright children should be entered automatically for triple science at GCSE, covering physics, chemistry and biology. He also called on the Government to offer 1,000 pounds a year to science, technology, engineering and math graduates. (ANI)
