Pakistan seals Balochistan border with Iran

Quetta, Sun, 21 Jun 2009 ANI

Quetta, June 21 (ANI): Pakistan has shut down its borders with Iran at Taftan for an indefinite period, The Nation reports.

The reason behind the sudden closure of the 'friendship gate' at Taftan was not clear, but sources said that the step has been taken due to security concerns.

The closing of the border has created a shortage of food materials in the region, and especially in the towns of Balochistan which borders Iran.

People in the region are complaining of severe shortage of edible articles, as they largely depend on products coming from Iran.

In may be noted that Iran had also sealed its border with Pakistan last earlier this month, in the wake of a suicide attack on a mosque that killed 25 people in the border city of Zahedan.

Bilateral trade and movement of people were also suspended following the closure of the border. (ANI)
