Symonds career limited to IPL as CA mulls discontinuing his central contract

Sydney, Fri, 05 Jun 2009 ANI

Sydney, Jun.5 (ANI): Controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds career may just be contained playing the Indian Premier League (IPL), as the Cricket Australia (CA) mulls over ending his central contract.

The CA is expected to discuss whether Symonds should be allowed to retain the contract after he broke a number of team rules related to alcohol and other issues ahead of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament in England, The Australian reports.

The board level meeting in this regard would be held next week.

Sources said that a series of slip-ups by Symonds was not a major offence but the final straw after a series of indiscretions in the previous few days and a recent history littered with off-field incidents could nail his spot in the national squad.

Symonds, who failed to earn selection in Australia"s Ashes squad announced last month, has been embroiled in a series of off-field indiscretions over the past year.

He has already been sent packing from England.

The Australians are due to face the West Indies on Sunday in their first match of the tournament, but they will now do so without Symonds.

Symonds was suspended from the national team in September last year for going fishing instead of attending a team meeting, while Symonds also had a run-in with a fan in a Brisbane hotel in ovember.

Symonds, who was also suspended in 2005 for arriving for a match under the influence of alcohol, received counselling earlier this year and returned to national colours in the victorious one-day eries win over Pakistan in Dubai in April. (ANI)
