UN observes International day of Non-Violence today
Oct 02: Today is Gandhi Jayanti, the 138 th birth anniversary of “Father of the Nation”, Mahatma Gandhi and on this holy occasion the whole nation pays homage to the symbol of nonviolence and his efforts in the struggle of India’s Independence.

Gandhian philosophy of peace and nonviolence is still relevant in this 21 st century, the world body recognizing his struggle for independence with a unique approach of nonviolence which later inspired the movements of human rights and freedom across the world; the United Nations from today onwards will mark the day ‘Oct 02’ as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Earlier on June 15, the 192 members United Nations General Assembly had decided to declare the day of Gandhi’s birth day as International Day of Non-Violence. His effort is indeed inspired many the other movements and has been continuously advocating peace, tolerance, brotherhood, non-violence as the weapons of worldwide understanding.
Though today’s world is full of strife and non-violence but the notion of Bapu’s non-violence is still practiced in many parts of the world and is the sole alternative to the destructive nuclear weapon, and certainly is more effective with its power of unity and brotherhood to institute peace in the universe.
India today is respected in other parts of the world not just for its high rate of economic growth but its tradition, culture and also Gandhiji’s gift of love and non-violence to the humanity and set an example in a conflict-ridden world.
Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri
The indebted nation today pays homage to Gandhi and his values he left for the rest of the human kind. Along with Gandhji’s birth anniversary the day also marks the 103rd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Various functions are organised in all state governments to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.
On this special occasion The UPA Chairperson and the Congress President, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi accompanied by the newly appointed General Secretary, Mr. Rahul Gandhi will address the UN General Assembly today evening at New York.
