Oct 01: General Deepak Kapoor becomes 23rd Indian Chief of the Army Staff on Sunday after the retirement of General J J Singh.
Gen Kapoor was commissioned in the Corps of Artillery in June 1967,
He commanded the Northern command of Indian Army. He was serving as Vice Chief of Army Staff before taking over as Chief of Army Staff.
After becoming the new Chief he said that his priority would be to step up the pace of modernisation.
He insisted on modernisation by giving modern technology to the soldiers for both policing the border and countering internal unrest.
He ruled out the immediate curtailment of army role in dealing with the terrorism. He said “Though there is an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and North East," there cannot be any curtailment of Army's role in combating terrorism keeping in view the geo-political situation and the threat from terrorists.
On Jammu and Kashmir situation he said "As and when things improve, we can take a fresh look on troop positions", the new Army chief said and asserted that the present "strategy" of pinpointed raids on militant hideouts in Jammu and Kashmir was paying "dividends".
"The multi-layer deployment is leading to reduction in violence in Jammu and Kashmir and we want the situation to further improve to give people a chance to live in peace he added.
Deepak Kapoor who himself is an MBA degree holder stressed on the need to make Army Officer techno savvy to be able to operate new weapons inducted in Army.
He is also in the favour of synergizing with Navy and Air Force.
He showed his concern for developing better culture and ethos in army which has been plagued by instances of suicides and fratricide.
The new Chief with his rich experience will be able to add to the grooming of army, who has served on various other prestigious posts. With several awards for his achievement, Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Param Vishist Seva Medal he will inspire many.
