Indian Army reports cease-fire violation again

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Srinagar, Aug.6 (ANI): The Indian Government reported fresh firing on Wednesday from across the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

"There has been fresh firing on our positions. The "brief firing with small arms" took place in the Nowgam sector, north of Srinagar. We're seeking to ascertain whether it was a militant attack or firing by Pakistani soldiers," said army spokesman Anil Kumar Mathur.

This is the third time that there has been a cease-fire violation in the past month. These incidents have been taken up at the highest level by India, but Pakistan has repeatedly denied the allegation.

Tensions have heightened between the South Asian neighbours since a suicide bombing outside the Indian embassy in Kabul on July 7 claimed the lives of over 50 people, including that of a diplomat and an army brigadier.

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in November 2003 and launched a peace process in 2004. Since then, there have been sporadic small clashes. (ANI)
