Almaty, May 26 (IANS) Indian and Kazakhstan business ties received a significant fillip when 71 Indian premier companies participated in a major trade promotion jamboree in this scenic commercial capital of Kazakhstan.
The Indian trade fair provided an 'excellent opportunity for Indian and Kazakhstani businessmen to forge one-to-one contact and promote and enhance economic cooperation', Indian Ambassador Ashok Sajjanhar said in a press statement issued here Tuesday.
The expo comes four months after Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited India in January to give a fresh impetus to bilateral relations in political and commercial spheres.
The three-day mega trade exhibition - India Expo 2009 - in Almaty saw Indian giants in the fields of oil and gas, thermal power, nuclear energy, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and food, promoting their products in the fastest growing economies in Central Asia.
Leading participants in the expo were ONGC, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Gas Authority of India, Indian Oil Corporation, Tea Board of India, Fashion Design Council of India and Punj Lloyd.
The exhibition was jointly organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the Indian embassy of in Kazakhstan and India-CIS Chamber of Commerce and Industry from May 21-23.
The event provided 'an excellent opportunity' to Indian and Kazakhstani businessmen to 'forge one-to-one contacts', Sajjanhar said.
He said Indian economy has not been affected 'severely' by the international financial crisis.
Sajjanhar said that last few months have seen 'a significant upsurge in the Indian economy'.
'More than $4 billion foreign investment entered into India over the last 40 days,' he said.
The ambassador also underlined that India is the fastest growing free market democracy and the new Congress-led government was 'determined to continue economic reforms'.
A fashion show by leading Indian fashion designers with models from India and Kazakhstan was organised at the concluding dinner of the event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Almaty.
Cultural programme presented by various schools of Indian Classical Dance in Kazakhstan added colour to the ceremony.
Sheela Bhide, chairman and managing director of ITPO, underscored the 'amazing march of India's industrial and technological advancement'.
The expo 'presented an ideal opportunity for Indian and Kazakhstani businessmen to promote and enhance economic cooperation,' Bhide said.
'Kazakhstan is rich in mineral resources. India is rich in technology and highly skilled manpower. Thus, this exhibition drove home the message that India is ready to collaborate with Kazakhstan not only in the area of natural resources but also to upgrade its industry through value addition and innovation, human resource development and manufacturing,' Bhide added.
