New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) The thundershowers and dust storms the capital witnessed Friday played havoc on Delhi's streets. Dozens of complaints from residents about traffic jams and damage from uprooted trees and collapsing buildings kept the civic agencies and police control rooms buzzing.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said Saturday that there were complaints about damages to vehicles, uprooted trees and waterlogging. Anxious residents also reported that a part of their house had collapsed.
'After the dust storm and rain, the Central Control Room received 25 complaints pertaining to falling trees, 16 pertaining to collapse of part of houses and eight complaints of waterlogging,' MCD spokesman Deep Mathur said.
The storm and showers were a result of cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan, according to the met office here.
The strong winds, at a speed of 55 km per hour, caused damage to many homes and vehicles.
'My neighbour's open bathroom window from the first floor unhinged and landed on my car, shattering the wind screen,' S. Sahu, a resident of south Delhi, told IANS.
Traffic was also affected in many parts of the capital.
'Traffic was moving at snail's pace at the ISBT crossing. It turned out a direction signboard had fallen, leaving only a narrow portion of the road for traffic,' said Rahul, a motorist.
The meteorological office has predicted more storms and thundershowers this weekend.
'The situation will continue at least for two days - and strong winds are likely to accompany the showers,' an official at the Safdarjung meteorological office told IANS.
