Recent Events and Developments in St Kitts and Nevis
In 1997 residents of Nevis voted in a referendum calling for secession from St Kitts. However the vote fell short of the 2/3rd majority required. Thus the uneasy association of the two islands has continued.

The country carried out its first execution in 1998, which was the first in seventeen years in spite of international protests. In the same year the island pair was struck by the devastating Hurricane George that caused widespread damage.

In 2000 Denzil Douglas inaugrated his second innings as PM of St Kitts and Nevis following the victory of his Labour Party and followed it up with a win in 2004, his third term.
2005 turned out to be a painful year for the old sugar industry as the government decided to close the long sick sugar industry after the harvest later in the year.
