St Lucia Recent Events and Developments
St Lucia was hit by a devastating tropical storm Lili in 2002 that destroyed half of the banana plantation and wreaked major havoc at many places. The St Lucian Parliament cut-off the last vestiges of its British loyalty in 2003 by replacing the oath of allegiance to the British crown with pledge of loyalty to St Lucians.
In November 2003 St Lucian parliament passed a new controversial code that provided for imprisonment for spreading ?false news? and legalised abortion in some cases. The St Lucia tourism industry received a much needed boost when the twin Pitons volcanoes were declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2004.
In 2007 St Lucia announced plans to re-establish its diplomatic ties with Taiwan that were severed a decade ago in favour of ties with China. In the same year the St Lucian PM Sir John Compton died and was replaced by Stephenson King.
