Qatar, a frontline US ally offered its al-Udeid air base for US-led assault on Iraq in 2002. In 2003 the Qatari Emir named his younger son Prince Tamim as his successor ahead of his elder son Prince Jassim. In the same year Qatari voters approved a new constitution that provided for a 45-member parliament. Out of these 30 members would be directly elected by the people and the rest by the emir. 2004 brought political to Qatar when two Russian agents killed former Chechen president Zelimkhan Yanderbiyev in Doha. Qatar-Russian relations deteriorated when the agents were handed life sentences but ultimately the pair were extradited to Russia. In 2005 Qatar?s first written constitution came into force ushering in widely anticipated democratic reforms. In 2007 Qatar and Dubai acquired the largest stake of the London Stock Exchange, the world?s third largest stock exchange. Whereas in 2008 Qatar?s first Christian church, St Mary?s Roman Catholic Church was inaugrated.
