Recent Events and Developments in Luxembourg
Jean-Claude Juncker was elected the PM of Luxembourg in 1995 following Jacques Santer?s appointment as the EU president. Juncker again emerged victorious in 1999 and retained his prime ministership.
In 2000 Crown Prince Henri succeeded his father Jean as the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Luxembourg adopted the Euro as its currency in 2002 ushering in a new era of closer integration with rest of Europe.
Juncker scored a hat trick in 2004 elections when his party again emerged victorious in the general elections and he was invited to form the government yet again. In 2008 Luxembourg was engulfed by a political uncertainty as the Grand Duke Henri refused to sign a bill legalising euthanasia into law. This hurdle was overcome by a constitutional reform that stripped the monarch of his veto powers and thus reducing him to a symbolic head. The bill was eventually passed.
