Lebanon Recent Events and Political Developments
The assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri in 2005 sparked off major anti-Syrian protests calling for withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanese soil. Syria complied with UN orders and withdrew its troops in the same year.
The same year saw the election of Fouad Sinoria, Hariri?s ally, as Lebanon?s PM who vowed to rebuild Lebanon?s relations with Syria. Meanwhile the spate of high profile killings continued unabated.
July 2006 witnessed Israeli aggression against Lebanon over mortar attacks by Hezbollah, the armed Shia group, inside Israel. The fighting lasted for a complete month and resulted in a thousand Lebanese casualties. In 2007 Hizbollah-led opposition called for the government?s resignation for its failure to stand up to Israeli aggression.
The protests took a violent turn in May 2008 when clashes broke out between Hezbollah and the government forces leading to 80 deaths. In the same year army chief Michel Suleiman was elected Lebanese President and he re-appointed Siniora as PM of the unity government.
President Suleiman visited Syria in the same year and the two countries pledged to restore full diplomatic ties between them.
