Born in the village of Bhambla, Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, she did her schooling from Dehradun. At college she enrolled herself for science but kept alive her dream of becoming a film star, that is now a reality. The daughter of a schoolteacher mother and businessman father got a chance to work in Movie Gangster. The movie was a commercial success and Kangna never looked back. Her role as a troubled model in Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Fashion' earned laurels and she won National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress besides winning Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. Her role of a rebellious girl in 'Tanu Weds Manu' got rave reviews and film was a commercial success.
Her Family still resides in the small town of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Besides her parents, she has an elder sister and younger brother in her family. Her ancestors were Rajputs from Rajasthan who later settled in Himachal Pradesh.
