Recent Activities in Cocoa Cote D?Ivoire
Cote D?Ivoire witnessed its second coup in 2002 in three years over the control of the lucrative cocoa industry. The dispute could be resolved only in 2003 when President Gbagbo signed a power sharing accord with the rebels.
However the unity government had to face dissent from early on which led to deployment of UN peacekeeping troops in May 2004. A final end to hostilities was announced in South Africa in 2005 after signing of a peace deal between the government and the rebels.
In 2007 under a new peace deal the Ivorian militia began to disarm, however the UNSC voted to keep its troops in Cote D?Ivoire for another year. Ivory Coast faced an economic crisis in 2008 under the impact of the global economic crisis and increasing oil prices.
The Cote D?Ivoire parliamentary elections to be held in October 2008 were put off till early 2009 pending investigations over allegations of rigging in identity card registrations. In the same year the UN extended its arms embargo on Cote D?Ivoire by another year to stem the violent tide that had engulfed the Cocoa country since the early 1990?s.
