Recent Political and Economic Developments in Hungary
In 2006, there was a mass upheaval in a rally in Budapest as the public became violent and demanded for the resignation of Prime Minister Gyurcsany as he himself had confessed that his government had not fulfilled its pre-election campaign promises.
In 2007, there was a commission of inquiry into the police action in 2006 in which 800 people were injured leading to crowd unrest.
In 2008, Hungary faced economic downturn due to the fallout of the global economic crisis. The opposition party sponsored a referendum against the government?s plan for changing the fee pattern of health care and higher education. The referendum proved to be a setback for the government?s plans of reforming the Hungarian economy. Also due to this global economic crisis, the currency of Hungary, forint got devalued. Hereby, it was offered financial aid worth $25bn (?15.6bn) by The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the EU and the World Bank to economic stimulus package to revive the flagging Hungarian economy.
