Recent Political and Economic Developments in Haiti
In the year 2006 February, Haiti had its first term of general elections after 2004 when President Aristide was ousted from his position and Rene Preval won the presidential elections.
In 2006 September, United Nations launched several rehabilitation programs to disarm extremists who took up arms in order to bring peace and stability in Haiti. While in the next month, United States partly lifted the prohibition on arms, which was imposed in the year 1991.
In 2008, there were food riots in Haiti due to the hike in the prices of rice, which is the island?s staple crop. Thereby, the Haitian government declared emergency plan to bring down the prices of rice and to put an end to the turmoil caused by the civilians. However, the Prime Minister of Haiti was held responsible for this unrest and he was dismissed by the Parliament. The World Bank and US also offered their support for the food aid by announcing a sum of 30m dollars.
In 2008 September, Haiti faced major devastation as it got hit by a hurricane in which around 800 people got killed and Haiti received international assistance to overcome its loss.
