Recent Cyprus Events and Developments
The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU in 2004 but as a divided island as the Turkish Cyprus refused to join it. In 2005, backed by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, reunification talks were initiated.

Cyprus saw its greatest peacetime tragedy when a Cypriot airliner carrying 121 passengers crashed near Athens killing all 121 on board. In 2006 series of confidence-building talks were held between Greek Cypriot President Papadopolous and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The same year saw the breakdown of Turkey-EU talks over the former?s refusal to open up its ports to traffic from the Republic of Cyprus. Turkey in turn demanded the end of Turkish Cyprus isolation by the international community.

In important confidence-building measures the Greek and Turkish Cypriots demolished the separation wall in Nicosia in 2007e confidence-building measures between the two. The Republic of Cyprus formally adopted the Euro in 2008 thus integrating its economy with the EU.

In 2008 Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders launch intensive negotiations aimed at ending the division of the island.
