In 2004 the wartime Croatian leader Milan Babic was jailed for 13 years for his crimes against non-Serbs in the early 1990?s. In the following year Croatia started EU-accession talks that was followed by electoral victory for incumbent President Stjepan Mesic.
The EU accession talks were stalled momentarily failing Croatia?s failure in arresting Gen. Ante Gotovina who was wanted for numerous war crimes. 2007 brought fresh criticism for Croatian government for construction of the Peljesac Bridge that would enable motorists to skirt Bosnian territory.
The 2008 parliamentary elections witnessed the election of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader who took his HDZ-led coalition to victory amid fierce electoral competition. 2008 also brought NATO invitation to Croatia pending final decision.
