The party founded in Tashkent on October 17, 1920, then part of soviet socialist republic, is one of the major political parties in India. M.N. Roy, Evelyn Trent Roy (Roy's wife), Abani Mukherji, Rosa Fitingof (Abani's wife), Mohammad Ali (Ahmed Hasan), Mohammad Shafiq Siddiqui and M.P.B.T. Acharya were founding members of the party. In recent past the party has supported United Progressive Alliance without participating in the ministry. In 2004 the party was supporting UPA and has formulated a plan of actions for the government called Common Minimum Programme. However in 2008, the part withdrawn its support from the UPA government citing reasons of United States-India Peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act.
