Cook Islands Political, Economic and Other Events
The Cook Islands was devastated by Cyclone Martin 1997 that imparted significant losses to the Black Pearl industry. In order to rapidly build up the Cook Island economy China granted a $16million aid to the visiting Cook Islands PM Robert Woonton in 2004. Cook Islands PM Robert Woonton narrowly kept his seat in the 2004 General elections, however his ties with the main challenger were revealed in the same year, which led to a by-election in which Jim Marurai emerged as the Premier. Cook Islands continued its battle with cyclones in 2005 when four cyclones hit Cook Islands in four weeks causing extensive damage to life and property. In the by-election held in 2006, the Cook Islands Party gained majority prompting snap elections. In the Parliamentary elections held in the same year the Democratic Party retained majority however the opposition Cook Islands party termed the elections unfair due to alleged voting irregularities.
