Recent Political, Economic and Other Events in China
President Hu Jintao came to power in 2002 replacing Jiang Zemin. In 2003 China was hit by the deadly SARS virus that filled the entire world with fears of a similar outbreak. China, which has a long-standing border dispute with India, reached a settlement over the status of Sikkim and Tibet. China became member of ASEAN+3 in 2004 thus giving a big boost to regional trade and commerce. China also passed a strict law enabling the use of armed force in the event of Taiwan declaring independence from it. 2006 saw a number of landmark events such as the second manned space flight aboard the Shenzou VI, the operation of the China-Tibet Rail line and the landmark China-Africa Heads of State Business Summit in Beijing. China had to face considerable flak from world powers in 2007 over the missile test in space in which an old weather satellite was shot down, giving rise to fears of a space war with neighbours like India. Tibet witnessed high-pitched anti-China protests in 2008 before the start of the Beijing Olympics. These protests consequently spread to other parts of the world. The year also witnessed a massive earthquake in Sichuan, which killed thousands of civilians, apart from this Russia and China also resolved all their outstanding border issues.
