Recent Financial News and Events from Cayman Islands
Due to the high proliferation of financial companies in the Cayman Islands owing to absence of any direct taxes that has resulted in large scale money trafficking, the government has slapped stricter banking regulations in order to counter the increasing menace of money laundering.
The Islands are also prone to hurricane strikes and Hurricane Ivan struck in 2004, which was the most devastating hurricane to strike in 86 years. Still due to the resilience shown by the people and the government of Cayman Islands, the infrastructure and economy was back in shape in less than two years.
In the elections held in 2005 Kurt Tibbets was elected Premier of Cayman Islands when his party, The People?s Progressive Movement defeated the governing United Democratic Party. The government of Cayman Islands launched a Constitutional review in 2007; the present constitution was adopted in 1972 and provides for substantial autonomy from Britain.
