Recent Political, Social and Economic Events and Developments in Canada
The NAFTA or the North American Free Trade Agreement signed between the US, Canada and Mexico has brought an economic boom for many Canadians but at the same time it has brought some unresolved issues to the fore. These relate to export tariffs levied by US on major Canadian exports like timber and agro-products that impact a significant population of Canadians. Canada being an environmentally conscious country and one of the main protagonists of the Kyoto protocol is worried by the pollution caused by US oil exploration near its borders in the south and in the east in Alaska. Canada also follows an independent foreign policy from the US, which is attested from the fact that it did not send its troops to the Iraq War nor does it support the trade embargo on Cuba. Recently, the Canadian government led by its PM Stephen Harper apologized to the Canadian Aboriginal population for the forced assimilation of their children in Canadian schools. The Canadian province of Quebec enjoys substantial autonomy and even has its own Prime Minister Jean Charest but the Canadian government made it clear that it would not allow Quebec to secede from Canada.
