Born in a Muslim family on March 14, 1965 in Mumbai, he is son of Tahir Hussain a film producer. He carved a distinctive niche for himself through various dazzling performances and having a firm opinion on various social issues. His one film at a time concept and giving award functions a miss have instilled audience faith in him as an actor. Besides bagging best actor award for six times he grabbed the attention of world media with his highly acclaimed film Lagaan that got nominated for the Oscars in the best foreign film category. He is one of the few actors in the bollywood who can assure a good business to the films.

Let us have a look on his highly successful filmography. After doing a film as a child artist he was first casted as a lead actor in a film Holi(1984), he got commercial success with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). And rest as they say is history. Later on films like Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander, Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi, Dil, Andaz Apna Apna and others proved that he was not one film wonder. A star was born.

The versatile actor catapulted himself with films like Ghulam, Sarfarosh and Earth but best was yet to come. His performance in Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India was superb and the film made to the Oscars in the best foreign film category. This talented film actor is still enthusiastic to do films with a good storyline.
