World Asthma Day
World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) on the first Tuesday of May with the noble purpose to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. With the theme of this year's (2009) event "You Can Control Your Asthma", an awareness-raising event organized by GINA. GINA has also planned to encourage a special focus on young children with asthma and communicating the message to parents that "Your Child's Asthma Can Be Controlled." As per data, more than 300 million people around the world have asthma, and the disease imposes a heavy burden on individuals, families, and societies. According to Global Burden of Asthma Report, the majority of asthma deaths in some regions of the world are preventable. There are numerous factors such as poor access to medical care, under-recognition by health professionals, lack of awareness among patients, and overlap of asthma symptoms with those of other diseases contributes to under-diagnosis of asthma. One of the major barriers to asthma control is the high cost of medicines and the truth that these medicines are still not available in some parts of the world such as parts of the Middle East, Southern Asia, Central America, and North, West, and East Africa. The first Asthma Day was celebrate in 1998 in which 35 countries had participated; the number has increased a lot in recent years.
