The PAN card is a national identification card issued to all Permanent Account Number (PAN) holders who get registered themselves with the income tax office. This card works as a centralized identity card and can be given as proof of identity any where across the nation.

The PAN card is a national identification card issued to all Permanent Account Number (PAN) holders who get registered themselves with the income tax office. This card works as a centralized identity card and can be given as proof of identity any where across the nation. The basic purpose of PAN card is to provide the tool to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) - the bank regulator and to Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) ? the stock market regulator to track the monetary transaction record of the PAN holder in the banks and in the securities.
It is a permanent and unique card and does not affect by a change of address, even between states. PAN card is something like social security card issued by USA to its citizen and other legal residents to recognize the identity.
A 10-digit character (first five characters are letters, next 4 numerals ad last character letter) is printed on the PAN card and provide unique identity.
