Manmohan Singh
Dr. Manmohan Singh is the eighteen and current Prime Minister of the Republic of India. He also served as the Union Minister for Finance, succeeded by P. Chidambaram. He was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985 and held the post of the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996 under Narsimha Rao-led government. Manmohan Singh belongs to the Indian National Congress party. He is the first Sikh to hold the post of Prime Minister as well as the first to govern from the Rajya Sabha. In the 2009 general elections, he made history as the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power for a second term after completing a full five year term. Dr. Manmohan Singh is an economist by profession and previously worked in International Monetary Fund and the United Nations. During his tenure as the Finance Minister, he was widely credited for initiating economic reforms in India in 1991 that ended the infamous Licence Raj system
