Indian National Congress (INC)
The Indian National Congress (INC) also known as Congress Party is a major political party in India. Allan Octavian Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, Womesh Chandra Bonerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Monomohun Ghose, and William Wedderburn founded the Congress Party of India in 1885. The Indian National Congress became the principal party of the Indian Independence Movement. With over 15 million members and over 70 million participants taken parts in struggle against British rule in India. After independence in 1947, it became the dominant political party in India and headed by Gandhi Family for most of the time. In the 15th Lok Sabha (2009), 205 members (out of 545), the largest party amongst all parties to serve the Indian legislation. The party is currently the chief member of the ruling United Progressive Alliance coalition. The Indian Prime Ministers from the Congress Party Jawaharlal Nehru, Gulzarilal Nanda, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. The Party chairperson of Indian National Congress is Sonia Gandhi.
