The 15th Lok Sabha general election in India was conducted in five phases on April 16, April 22, April 30, May 7 and May 13, 2009. India is the largest democracy in the world, and according to the Indian Constitution, election in India for the lower house must be held at least every five years in normal condition. The term of 14th government concluded on 1st June 2009.
The general election in India is conducted, monitored and supervised by the Election Commission of India (EC). According to EC during 15th Lok Sabha election 714 million voters are in electorate lists. In this electorate list 43 million new voters were added over the previous 2004 election. The budget of Rs.1.120 Crores was presented by EC to carry out election expenses.
Three Indian states Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim will have state legislative election along with general Lok Sabha election.
In 2009 general election, the Election Commission of India announced that on 499 constituencies, election would be conducted on basis of delimitation out of 543 parliamentary constituencies. The newly delimitation constituencies is determined by the Delimitation Commission as set up under the Delimitation Act, 2002. The delimitation will be enacted on all states and union territories except in states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Manipur and Nagaland.
