Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a pro-democrat activist and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma. She was born 19 June 1945 in Rangoon. Suu Kyi won the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 the Government of India awarded her the Jawaharlal Nehru peace prize for her peaceful and non-violent struggle against the military dictatorship She is currently under detention, with the Burmese junta military ruler and time after time her detention is extending. According to the results of the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi was to be Prime Minister as she is the leader of the winning National League for Democracy party, but her detention by the military junta prevented her from becoming Prime Minister. The Government of Canada gave Aung San Suu Kyi Honorary Canadian citizenship in 2007. She is only the fourth person in history to receive this honour.
