Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) previously known as Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) founded in 1980, is a major political party of India. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a nationalist leader, former Union Minister and freedom fighter founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951. The party advocates welfare social policies, self-reliance, robust economic growth, foreign policy driven by a nationalist agenda, and strong national defense. BJP represent the country's majority Hindu community and the Sikh population. The party has a strong relation with the Sangh Parivar. The BJP is one of the few parties in India that has popular-based governing structure, where workers and leaders at the local level participate in decision-making. BJP is often described as center-right in nature. The concept of Hindutva holds prominent place in BJP ideology. In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004) it was the single largest party with 179 out of 545 members. Mass organisations associated with the BJP include Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (All-India Students' Council), Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (Indian People's Youth Front), Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (India Peasants' Union), Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (Indian Workers' Union), BJP Mahila Morcha (Indian Popular Women's Front).
