Portugal and Its Dispute with a Town in Spain

Portugal is a country that is located right next to Spain. The country has some similarities with Spain. For example, although Portugal does have its own language that Portuguese language is somewhat similar to the Spanish language that is followed in Spain.

However, the proximity between the two countries has created a substantial dispute between the two over the town of Olivenza. This is a town that is located on the southern part of the border between the two countries.

Olivenza is officially interpreted as the property of Spain. However, Portugal has expressed a direct claim to the town.

Portugal had controlled Olivenza since the end of the thirteenth century. However, Spain ended up taking over the town in 1801. The Treaty of Badajoz states that Spain has control over Olivenza. Therefore, the town is officially controlled by Spain.

However, Portugal refuses to acknowledge this. Portugal has personally declined the treaty even though the treaty has been recognized by other official authorities.

Meanwhile, there are some concerns over the Treaty of Vienna. This treaty, which was filed in 1815, states that the occupation of the town by Spain is illegal. This was used as a means of acknowledging that Portugal was a critical supporter of the United Kingdom. This caused Spain to keep from agreeing with the treaty. As a result, the dispute between the two countries over the town has continued to occur.

The two countries have been supportive of one another and had even signed a treaty for full cooperation and peace between one another in the 1970s. However, the treaty that was agreed upon did not mention anything about how Olivenza is being handled. Therefore, Spain continues to hold control over the town. Portugal is expected to keep on disputing the occupation of the country with Spain.
