Norway Keeping Spot as One of World's Richest Countries

In terms of per capital, Norway is one of the richest countries in the world. The government promotes a liberal environment for foreign trade and they have a large shipping fleet to help them with it. This fleet is said to be one of the most modern among any of the maritime nations. The most important industries to this country include fishing, shipbuilding, chemicals, metals, and pulp and paper products.

The economy of Norway wasn't always so flourishing. The major change happened in the 1970's when the country become a large producer of gas and oil. There were massive amounts of money invested into the country, specifically into the offshore oil. This led to more increases in the production costs and wages than were experienced in the rest of Europe up until the mid-1980s.

The increase of oil revenue for the country allowed it to work with the social welfare system and to expand it. They created a special program to save some of these funds brought in by the oil industry. In late 2010, their assets in the fund reached over $500 billion dollars.

The global financial crisis did not have much of an impact on the economy of Norway. The government proved to be prudent in financial regulations and in their use of the high prices for the energy and fish exports. The unemployment rate did increase a small amount but still remains fairly low. There is decreased competitiveness within the industries because the faster increasing labor costs. There is some recovery expected pertaining to these issues in the near future.

Norway continues to make major trade deals with the European Union, the United States and with China. Their careful allocation of revenues plus the ability to bring in large amounts has brought the country a lot of success that they will most likely continue to see for some time to come.
