Nicaragua Poverty Disguised by Numbers

When sorting out how well an economy is doing, there are a lot of numbers that come into play. Sometimes these numbers can tell a bit of a different story than is what actually happening. That is the case with Nicaragua. Currently they are ranked in the bottom few with others of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. The economy has gotten even smaller since the economic recession. There has been less demand for their exports coupled with a decreasing domestic investment.

Where the numbers fall short of describing the situation is with the employment rates. Unemployment rates typically only take into account the individuals searching for work that do not have any. It doesn't necessarily mention the underemployment that a country experiences. Nicaragua has approximately 8% unemployment but most of the locals work in the informal sector. In fact, 65% of people work in that sector and this is where there is plenty of underemployment. So while the people have jobs, they are not making enough to create decent living conditions for themselves.

Agriculture is a very important part of the country's economy. There is a lot of arable land suitable for growing crops for both commercial and local use. They also have water in abundance. Agriculture, fishing and timber account for almost a third of the revenue that the government takes in. There are growing opportunities in this country for food and timber processing and creating exports of these products.

Although there have been a lot of obstacles for the nation to overcome, there are areas for growth in the export industry. There have been some free trade agreements signed and with prices for certain commodities rising, they may seem some improvement in the coming years. With the improvement of health and education, recovery, though slow, will hopefully see more progression.
