Myanmar is Not Always Called That

The Republic of the Union of Myanmar is a country that is referred to as Myanmar by people in its local area. However, not all places around the world will refer to Myanmar under this name. Many authorities still refer to Myanmar under its original name of Burma. This is due to the tough control that is being placed over the country under its current name of Myanmar.

The reason as to why Burma became Myanmar is because of a military junta. This is a type of rule where a series of members of the military will take charge of a country.

General Ne Win was the ruler of Burma for more than twenty-five years. Ne Win was removed from office in 1988 during the military junta. The junta continued to rule over Myanmar even though people voted for opposing parties to win their elections a few years after the junta began.

This has prompted a large number of protests and demonstrations by people around Myanmar in opposition to the junta. The most notable part of this comes from the house arrest of opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi for most of the 1990s and the 2000s.

It is not certain as to when the standard government is going to take charge of Myanmar instead of the military control that the country is under. In fact, a new constitution was created in January 2011. This constitution has not gone into effect. It is not clear as to whether or not the junta will allow it to work.

This has caused the number of internally displaced persons in Myanmar to total a little over half a million. The ongoing dispute over the old ways of Burma and the current rule of Myanmar has created many concerns among people in all parts of the country.
