London Olympics 2012: The Grandest Sports Event

The 30th Summer Olympic began in London on July 27 2012 amid fascinating final lighting of the Olympic cauldron, sparkling lightening performance and elegant performance of Sir Paul McCartney and other celebrities.

On the London Olympic opening ceremony around 15,000 performers performed in three hours of dazzling opening ceremony in the presence of 10, 500 sports persons and Royal family of Britain. The opening ceremony officially kicked off by United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip. Prince Williams, his wife and duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton and Prince Harry were present in the opening ceremony along with U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, U.N. The 17 days long, 30th London Olympics 2012 is considerably the grandest sports events in the world in which 10,500 sportsmen and sportswomen from 204 nations are expected to participate. The USP of London is that in the 30th edition of summer Olympic, each nation has at least one women participants as Muslim nations including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei have included women participants for the first ever time in world's biggest sports events.

London, the capital of Great Britain won the bid for 30th summer Olympic on 6 July 2005 during the 117th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Singapore, defeating bids from Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. London has become the first city to host modern Olympic Games three times - 1908, 1948 and 2012.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) was created to oversee the progress of London Olympic 2012 project including the development of 200-hectare Olympic Park besides other already existed venues, the arrangements for the guests and sportspersons and security.

The total estimated cost reached to £9.3billion (US14.46billion) in 2007 in which the costs of developing infrastructure and habitations of foreign visitors are excluded. The cost of opening day ceremony was £27-million, which was directed by English movie director, producer and Oscar award winner Daniel Boyle (Danny Boyle).

Two logos have been designed for London summer Olympics - first for bidding process and second for the game. The brand official logo which was designed by Wolff Olins making the shape of river Thames of East London, will be used in both London summer Olympics 2012 and London Paralympic games 2012, which will be held after concluding first grand ceremony. London is written on Logos and Olympics rings, embedded with zero are stuck on the upper side of logos. The logos were designed in many colours.

Wenlock is mascot of London summer Olympic 2012 which was unveiled on 19 May 2010 along with mascot of London paralympic Olympic 2012 'Mandeville'. Both Wenlock and Mandeville are animations depicting two drops of steel from a steelworks in Bolton.

For awarding to players at 302 victory ceremonies in London Olympics and paralympic 2012, 4,700 (appprox.) medals have been designed. The Royal Mint has produced the medals. David Watkins has designed medal for Olympic and Lin Cheung has designed for paralympic.

For watching the events, organizers have released 8 million tickets for London summer Olympics and 1.5 million tickets for London paralympic. The cost of the ticket would range from £20 to £2012. The most expensive ticket of worth £2012 is reserved for opening ceremony.

A total 26 sports in 39 disciplines have been scheduled in London summer Olympics 2012 in which women's boxing is included for the first time in this mega event while mixed doubles in Tennis has been re-included since after 1924.

The host nation Great Britain has the largest pool of players (541), followed by United States of America (530) and Russia (436). India has sent a pool of 83 players to take participate in different games.

The concluding day ceremony is scheduled to be held on August 12, 2012 where mayor of London will hand over the Olympic torch to Rio de Janeiro's (Brazil) mayor to host the 2016 summer Olympics.
