Christmas Celebration in China

In China, only about one percent of population is Christian; so most don’t have enough knowledge about this festival and its celebration style. Christianity is restricted to few places and celebrations are mostly centered on town. In China December 25, is not a legal holiday.

As China becomes a part of global village most of us can witness the impact of western style celebration of Christmas in China. The Chinese have also started erecting Christmas Trees and with affection they called it ‘Trees of Light’ and this tree marvelously decorated with paper lights, lanterns, paper flowers, chains and toys. Giant Christmas trees are also erected in shopping plazas and hotel and restaurant as mark of Christmas celebration.

Children like everywhere else in the world, Chinese children also put up their stockings to woo their Santa Claus, the Old man they call Dun Che Lao Ren, often dressed just like Santa Claus. Large malls and stores have Santa dressers handing out gifts and sweets for kids.

Christians in China offers prayer in Church on the Christmas Day and sing carol. They also exchange gifts, sweets, toffee and wishes as a way of celebration. Jingle Bell is a popular carol in China and it can be hear at major shopping plaza.

However, Christmas feast, whether lunch or dinner, have more in common with traditional Chinese festival banquets than traditional Western feast. However what does not change is the spirit of festivity. The Chinese Christmas cake is different from the traditional cake, it much alike the Christmas pudding of the West.
