Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to reach Nigeria and soon they colonialised it in the first half of the 18th century. In the second half of 18th century British-Nigeria started and soon Britain colonized Nigeria. Nigeria was under strong British control till the end of the WW II. After considerable struggle it was finally able to win complete independence in 1960. After 16 years of military rule the new Nigerian constitution was adopted in 1999 and power transferred to elected representatives.
