Netherlands: Former Great European Sea Power

The Netherlands was founded by Julius Caesar and was inhabited by Germanic tribes the Nervii, Frisii and Batavi. Between the 4th to the 8th century the Netherlands was under the reign of the Franks and became part of Charlemagne's empire in the 8th and 9th centuries. Before becoming a part of Spanish Empire in 16th century it was ruled by Burgundy and the Austrian Hapsburgs. In 1568 William of Orange revolted against the decision to suppressed political liberties by Philip II of Spain. The seven northern provinces became the United Provinces of the Netherlands under the Union of Utrecht in 1579. The Dutch gained independence from Spanish rule in 1648. The Dutch East India Company was established in 1602 and by the end of the 17th century Holland became one of the great sea and colonial powers of Europe.
