Montserrat: British Overseas Territory Populated with Irish Descendants
In 1632 English and Irish colonists first settled in Montserrat and later during the 18th century British and French forces fought for possession over this Caribbean island. And in 1783 after decade long battle the British established its possession over the Montserrat and African slaves were brought to this island for working on the sugar plantations. The Soufrière Hills volcano began erupting in 1995 and continued for three years. By 1998 the capital city Plymouth was destroyed and the southern and central parts of the British colony were evacuated due to unabated volcanic eruptions.

The culture of Montserrat is largely based on the practices and followings of Carib tradition. The tribal aspects of African culture can also be seen in the culture of Montserrat people due to presence of African slaves during the colonial period. The culture of Britain predominates this island due to the long colonial rule and it is still prevalent and mostly vividly depicted in the Catholic faith adopted by majority of the islanders. Cricket is a popular sport in Montserrat and Jim Allen was the first native to play for West Indies and he also in represented the World Series Cricket.
The cuisine of Montserrat resembles the British and Caribbean recipes and consists of a wide range of meats, fish, seafood and Chicken that is mostly eaten grilled or roasted. There are many seafood cakes especially lobster cakes that are popular throughout Montserrat. It is made up of mixed greens vegetables and tomato tartar sauce and served with snacks. Other popular meals of the Montserrat are Montserrat jerk shrimp, with rum, cinnamon bananas and cranberry.

The scenic beauty consisting of natural landscapes along with silvery seashore with azure blue water remains the center of attraction for the tourist. But the volcanic eruption of 1995 and 1997 ruined almost all the connectivity to beautiful sites. After years long rehabilitation Montserrat is again gaining momentum as a tourist destination.
Montserrat Volcano Observatory: is famous for its close view of live volcanoes. It remains the center of attraction due to its proximity to volcanic sites and visitors see the molten lava and feel its heat.
Oriole Walkway Trail: is famous for its location on the Hill Top and near the Bank of Montserrat. This gives magnificent view of northern part of the Montserrat Island.
