Marshall Islands: Tiny Micronesian Island Nation

The Micronesian peoples first inhabited the archipelago on Marshall Islands. In 1526 Spanish explorer Alonso de Salazar discovered it. But in 1788 the RMI was named after British captain John Marshall. In 1885 Germany made several attempt to capture Marshall Islands. During the World War I Japan seized it but after a series of battles during World War II the US overthrew the Japanese power. In 1947 Marshall Island along with Mariana and Caroline archipelagos became the U.S. territory. Between 1946 and 1958 US tested several nuclear and hydrogen bombs due to which most of the Marshall Islands remains uninhabited till today. US paid $183.7 millions in order to relocate the people of RMI. In 2000, Kessai Note became the first commoner to become president of RMI.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is a nation made up of 29 coral atolls and 5 low-lying islands in the central Pacific Ocean located mid-way between Hawaii and Australia.
